Wisdom from Martin Bucer the Reformer

...it remains true that we are justified, that is, accepted and reconciled to God by this faith in so far as it apprehends God’s mercy and the righteousness which is imputed to us on account of Christ and his merit, not on account of the worth or perfection of the righteousness which is imparted to us in Christ.

Therefore living faith is that which apprehends God’s mercy in Christ and believes that the righteousness of Christ is freely imputed to oneself, and at the same time receives the promise of the Holy Spirit and also love.

How can a person who is untrained in piety inflame others with it? Ifhe overflows with every type of vice, by what method will he purge you of it? If he is wholly lacking knowledge and judgment, what will he teach you of them? If he never perceives the dejection of his own conscience, how will he encourage yours? In summary, how can anyone be the supporter or author of your amendment of life who is totally enslaved to his sins and never thinks of recoiling from them?

Whatsoever things we do well and holily are to be ascribed to none other than to this one only Spirit, the Giver of all virtues.

By this we are so far from rejecting good works that we utterly deny that any one can be saved unless by Christ's Spirit he be brought thus far, that there be in him no lack of good works, for which God has created in him.

What God has commanded must be good and bring about only good, and we should establish those things and observe them according to God's word for as long as we can.

We so called Christians have long deserved even more severe punishment and disciplining than we have already experienced.
