Wisdom Quotes from Martin Luther the Reformer

All who call on God in true faith, earnestly from the heart, will certainly be heard, and will receive what they have asked and desired, although not in the hour or in the measure, or the very thing which they ask. Yet they will obtain something greater and more glorious than they had dared to ask.

Quote from Martin Luther, German Reformer

A Christian man is the most dutiful servant of all, and subject to everyone.

As regards kingship, every Christian is by faith so exalted above all things that, in spiritual power, he is completely lord of all things, so that nothing whatever can do him any hurt; yea, all things are subject to him, and are compelled to be subservient to his salvation.

Here is the truly Christian life, here is faith really working by love, when a man applies himself with joy and love to the works of that freest servitude in which he serves others voluntarily and for nought, himself abundantly satisfied in the fullness and riches of his own faith...And as our heavenly Father has freely helped us in Christ, so ought we freely to help our nieghbor by our body and works, and each should become to other a sort of Christ, so that we may be mutually Christ's, and that the same Christ may be in all of us; that is, that we may be truly Christians.

Quote from Martin Luther

Our faith in Christ does not free us from works but from false opinions concerning works, that is, from the foolish presumption that justification is aquired by works.

...that we should devote all our works to the welfare of others, since each has such abundant riches in his faith that all his other works and his whole life are a surplus with which he can by voluntary benevolence serve and do good to his nieghbor.

Thus the promises of God give what the commandments of God demand and fulfill what the law prescribes so that all things may be God's alone, both the commandments and the fulfilling of the commandments.

...the social corpus of Christendom includes secular government as one of its component functions.  This government is spiritual in status, although it discharges a secular duty.

There are many who say these words, "I believe in God the Father," but do not understand what these words mean.

For he who believes that he will be saved by his own works and not through Christ [does not believe that Christ is his Lord].

I believe that God is the creator, who has given me my body and soul, all members, all physical goods, all possessions.  Therefore I owe it to him to serve, thank and praise him.

Quote from Martin Luther

Poverty hath slain a thousand, but riches have slain ten thousand.  They are very uncertain, they promise that which they cannot perform, neither can they afford a contented mind.

Martin Luther, German Reformer

When our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, said 'repent,' He called for the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.

At the same time just and sinner.

Whoever knows well this art of distinguishing between Law and Gospel, him place at theb head and call him a doctor of Holy Scripture.

Christians are not made righteous by doing righteous things, but being made righteous by faith in Christ, they do righteous things.

I am much afraid that schools will prove to be the great gates of hell unless they diligggently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them in the hearts of the youth.

I advise no one to place his child where the scriptures do not reign paramount.  Every institution in which men are not increasingly occupied with the Word of God must become corrupt.

Martin Luther, German Reformer

If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ.

Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved and to be steady on all the battlefeild besides is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that one point.

Quote from Martin Luther, German Reformer

In his life, Christ is an example, showing us how to live; in his death, he is a sacrifice, satisfying our sins; in his resurrection, a conqueror; in his ascension, a king; in his intercession, a high priest.

Martin Luther, German Reformer

Here I stand; I can do no other.  God help me.  Amen.

Martin Luther, at the Diet of Worms

Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection not in books alone, but in every leaf in the springtime.

Martin Luther, German Reformer

A Christian man is the most free lord of all, and subject to none.

Quote from Martin Luther, German Reformer

The best way to drive out the devil, if he will not yield to texts Scripture, is to jeer and flout him, for he cannot bear scorn.

Martin Luther, German reformer

They are damned who flee damnation.

Martin Luther, German reformer

The essence of sin is that man seeks his own in everything even in God.

Martin Luther, German reformer

The whole purpose of the apostle, as of his Lord, is to humble the proud, to teach them their need of grace, to destroy their own justice, and drive them in humility to Christ, that they may confess themselves sinners, receive grace and be saved.

Martin Luther, German reformer

The cry "my God, my God" was like blasphemy but it was not.  Some may object that it certainly indicates discord between the will of Christ and the will of God.  That would have been true had we been in his place...Nevertheless we are not to deny that Christ was terrified and tormented like the damned when they tremble and flee from God.  Christ in his own eyes was like them, a derelict, accused, a sinner, a blasphemer and damned, even though he was without sin and guilt.  It was no make-believe that cry "My God, my God."  This should be a comfort to those who are vexed by the abyss to the gate of death lest they despair and a warning to those who walk upon the clouds and make their nests among the stars, lest they presume.

Martin Luther, German reformer

We are not justified by works but just works proceed from the just.

Martin Luther, German reformer

Christians should be taught that he who neglects the needy in order to secure pardons earns not the indulgence of the Pope but the indignation of God.
