Posted 1/12/2011God is Not a Very Good American, His View of Tolerance is not as High as the American Relativist
Tolerance is the only absolute truth left in this American culture. Every “good” American believes that you must tolerate everything that any other American believes is good. This tolerance is defined in such a way that you are not only required to respect people with whom you disagree, but you must view their opinion as equal with all other opinions. By this definition of tolerance God would not make a very good American.
Three little words that God uses over and over again would disqualify Him from earning the label of the nice guy. If it weren't for those three little words, “thou shalt not,” people just might like God. It isn't bad enough that God goes around telling people what not to do, but He goes so far as to tell them to not have any other God before him. Not only is He intolerant, but God is arrogant.
You see, that is the great virtue in the new tolerance – humility. Of course every American believes that his view of things is right, but he is humble enough to allow that the guy who disagrees with him is right as well. No matter that one believes that the government should take money from the rich to give to the poor, while the next guy believes that forcefully taking money from one citizen to give to another is legal theft. Never mind that one believes homosexuality is just another alternative life style, while the next guy believes that homosexuality is sinful behavior. Or just because one believes that abortion should be a woman's choice, while the next person believes that abortion is murder, as long as they are humble enough to be tolerant, they can both be right.
Then God comes along and says thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not commit adultery and thou shalt not kill. That would be fine if He would just tolerate those who believe the precise opposite of His commands, but no, He has to be snooty about it, and deny His fellow American the right to steal, kill, and destroy. God just thinks He is always right. That is simply unacceptable in the mind of the American. As long as He keeps thinking like that He's not going to have any friends. God is just un-American.
For the record, God is tolerant, and He calls His people to demonstrate tolerance to those whom they disagree with. The problem is that God defines tolerance differently than Americans have been taught to define it. God is not afraid to tell people they are wrong when they violate His standards, but He does respect those who are wrong. He does not elevate their opinion to equality with His, but he continues to respect and love them even when they are wrong.
Unfortunately, none of that can be tolerated by Americans. It just isn't humble enough for them. Oh, wait a minute. Think about this for a minute. Is it really all that humble to believe that you are better than the creator and sustainer of the universe? Is it really unreasonable for an all knowing God to expect everyone to agree with Him? Don't expect the majority of Americans to humble themselves to admit the fallacy of their philosophy. If you are willing to let this realization change your life, search His Word for what is right for every area of your life. Who knows, maybe enough Americans will humble themselves before God, so He will be welcome in America again. |
